 MISSION STATEMENT:

The Kent County Community School and Delaware Autism Program, with the cooperation of the parents, students, staff, and all community stakeholders, seek to enhance the opportunities, to increase the student’s level of independence, self-esteem, personal confidence, in preparation for the opportunities that await the students through each transition.

SCHOOL PROFILE:

The Kent County Community School (KCCS) started as two classrooms in the back of the William Henry Comprehensive School in 1966 and has been serving students with moderate to severe disabilities for 59 years. Kent County Community School is a referral-based countywide program that serves students from the Capital, Caesar Rodney, Lake Forest, Milford, and Smyrna School Districts. KCCS has approximately 287 students across seven sites that range in age from two to twenty-two who exhibit a variety of disabilities that include physical, sensory, cognitive, communication, and those that are medically fragile. We are also the Delaware Autism Program for the Capital School District.

We have our students with the most profound needs at our Main Site location, which has students from 2-22 years old. We also have satellite locations for our students who benefit from inclusion with their typical peers at BTW Elementary School, William Henry Middle School, both Dover Middle Schools, and Dover High School. Additionally, we have two 18-22 programs for our young adults to learn independent living and vocational skills: STRIVE and Project SEARCH.

As an educational facility our primary purpose is to provide an educationally appropriate program for each student designed around their individual needs and supported by our related services. KCCS uses a consultative and integrated approach to service delivery where teachers and therapists work collaboratively in designing and delivering educational and therapeutic strategies in the classroom.
